What Does Abide Mean? The Word Jesus Repeats in John 15

In the Bible, abide means to remain, to stay, to make your home somewhere. It translates the Greek word menō, and Jesus repeats it again and again in John 15: "Abide in me, and I in you" (John 15:4).

Pronunciation and origin

Menō is pronounced MEN-oh. It is an ordinary Greek verb for staying put: remaining in a house, lodging somewhere for the night, continuing in a place or a state. John uses it more than any other New Testament writer, in both his Gospel and his letters.

English translations have long rendered it "abide". Some modern versions say "remain". Either way, the word is about staying, not visiting.

Where it appears in the Bible

The best-known passage is John 15:1-11, on the night before the crucifixion. Jesus describes himself as the vine, his Father as the vinedresser and his followers as the branches.

"Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me." John 15:4

The same word appears earlier, when the first disciples ask Jesus where he is staying, and he answers, "Come and you will see" (John 1:38-39). Their first question was where he abides. His answer was an invitation.

What it means for us

The picture is simple. A branch does not strain to make fruit. It does not perform or prove itself. It stays attached, and the life of the vine does the rest.

Abiding is not passive, though. Jesus links it to keeping his words and his commands (John 15:7, 15:10), and to love: "Abide in my love" (John 15:9). It looks like returning, daily, to the One you belong to. Prayer, Scripture and obedience are less a list of tasks than the ways a branch stays connected.

For anyone tired of striving, it is a gentle word. Not do more. Stay.

Why ABIDE is a SEALED design

We embroidered ABIDE small on the chest of a heavyweight hoodie, with 1:13 at the cuff, because it is a word for ordinary days: worn on the school run, at the desk, on the walk home. A reminder that is seen by you first.

Questions people ask

What does abide mean in John 15?

To remain or stay joined to Jesus, as a branch stays joined to a vine. The Greek word is menō.

Is abide the same as believe?

They belong together. Believing is trusting Jesus. Abiding is continuing in that trust over time, staying close rather than drifting.

How do you abide in Christ?

Jesus connects it to holding on to his words, keeping his commands and remaining in his love (John 15:7-10). In practice, that means staying near him through prayer, Scripture and the life of the church.
